A Gulf Fritillary, Agraulis vanillae, on gold Lantana, Lantana camara, in Munford. These butterflies can be seen in northeast Alabama throughout the summer, but are particularly plentiful in the fall. They are recognizable from their brilliant orange, elongated wings. The undersides of the wings have silvery stripes that flash in the sun. Gulf Fritillaries are rather large butterflies, with wingspans of about three inches.
