"Residents can look out and remember what good man he was, and what he has done for our center over the years," said service coordinator Debra Ponder. Fite died last October after a sudden illness.
Housing maintenance supervisor Ray Bittle dug the hole, and resident Marie Hicks, along with others, shoveled in the dirt around the tree, forever giving it a home at the assisted living facility.
Jacksonville City Councilman Truman Norred said the benediction, and then Mayor Johnny Smith shared some memories of the good work Rep. Fite has done for the community.
The American Maple (Acer circinatum) was donated by local nursery Bloomin' Miracles.
The tree, native to the Pacific Northwest, is related to the Japanese maples and will grow about 30 feet tall, with excellent fall color and an unusual leaf shape.
Residents will be able to enjoy their maple tree in all seasons from the windows of their community room.
