Jacksonville, seeded No. 5 in the tournament, was upset by No.12 seed White Plains 41-38 to make the Lady Eagles appearance in the tournament a brief one.
White Plains went on to lose to No. 4 seed Wellborn.
Jacksonville's mishaps began early in the game. Lady Eagles leading scorer, Lacy Buchanon, who averages over 20 points a game, went down hard in the opening minute of play with a shin injury. Even though Buchanon attempted to come back into the game in the second quarter and played some in the fourth quarter, Buchanon was visibly limping and wasn't up to her normal game of steals and consequent lay-ups.
Buchanon ended up playing only nine minutes scoring only two points in the game.
Despite Buchanon's absence, the rest of the Lady Eagles did their best to step up in her absence.
White Plains jumped out to a 13-4 first quarter lead. The White Plains defense did a good job of keeping the ball from going inside to post players Sharon Osterbind and Kenyatta Ervin.
Buchanon came in during the second quarter and immediately got the steal, but unable to finish it off dished it off to senior Megan Snider who pulled up and hit a three.
White Plains jumped back out to a 17-9 lead with 5:30 left to play in the half. Buchanon was fouled and hit both of her shots, her only two points of the game, and Osterbind also hit two foul shots and jumper from the lane.
Snider put the Eagles to within two on another three pointer and Ervin tied up the game at 21-21 after getting three consecutive rebounds and then connected with the basket.
White Plains Shanea Cromer hit two foul shots to bring White Plains to within one, 24-23. After a missed basket, White Plains Jordan Coleman tied up the game with a foul shot to bring the half to an end 24-24.
The third quarter was a see-saw battle with Snider, Ervin and Osterbind scoring for the Lady Eagles and Joy Cain, Coleman and Cromer scoring key points for the Lady Wildcats.
The third quarter came to and end with White Plains up by two, 33-31.
White Plains jumped out to a four point lead to start the fourth quarter but a fancy underhanded basket by Lady Eagles Lakken Wood got Jacksonville back to within two.
Osterbind tied up the game with two foul shots with 4:33 left in the game.
The Lady Eagles seemed to be more comfortable going into the post in the fourth quarter to Osterbind, but with Jacksonville up by one point with 2:44 left in the game, Osterbind was injured and had to be taken to the locker room.
Cromer tied up the game with a foul shot and then a steal and layup by the Lady Wildcats gave them a two point, 40-38 lead.
With 37 seconds left to play, Buchanon back in the game, tried her best to get the ball down court but still limping, traveled.
White Plains Mikayla Owen was fouled and went to the line and made one.
With time running out Jacksonville attempted a three to tie up the game but it didn't fall and they took the loss.
Osterbind finished with 14 points and six rebounds, Megan Snider with 11 points and Ervin, who came on very strong in the second half, had nine points, 14 rebounds and four steals.
Jordan Coleman led White Plains with 11 points.
The Lady Eagles (7-7, 1-3) will play at Alexandria in an area game on Friday night.
