Jacksonville's Parks and Recreation Department's soccer season has officially wrapped up. The season culminated with three teams representing Jacksonville in the Alabama PARD Soccer Tournament in Dothan.

The three teams that advanced to state were the 13-and-under co-ed team, the 11-and-under girls' team, and the nine-and-under co-ed team.

Jacksonville PARD Director Janis Burns said that Jacksonville kids have a lot of potential.

"I think it shows that there is a lot of talent in this city," said Burns. "We are able to give them the groundwork that they need and can teach them so when they advance to the upper level, they are prepared."

The 13-and-under co-ed team placed first in the district completion and received the Sportsmanship Award at the state tourney. The team awarded the Sportsmanship Award is picked by officials who watch the actions of the kids, parents and coaches on and off the field.

"I heard from others there that if a kid from the other team fell on the ground, our kids would stop and help them up and not just leave them," said Burns. "I think that says a lot about our community."

The 11-and-under Panthers All Star girls' team had to play in the boys' co-ed division in the district because there was not a girls' league locally. Playing in a different division did not stop them from having an undefeated season. The team then went on to place third in state completion. Members of the team represented several local schools including: Kitty Stone, Pleasant Valley, Jacksonville Christian Academy and Weaver.

The nine-and-under co-ed team finished second in district completion and was able to represent Jacksonville in state completion.

Next up for the always-busy Jacksonville PARD is basketball season.

"We had two of our girls' basketball teams advance to state last year so we are looking for a repeat hopefully," said Burns.
