The Lady Eagles will play tonight as they host the Van Deerman Christmas Classic. They will play at 6.
In the first game against Cherokee County last week, the Lady Eagles and Warriors were well matched as the lead changed hands several times. Jacksonville, ahead 11-7 at the end of the first quarter, took a 20-17 lead into the locker room at the half.
Using a definite height advantage, the Lady Warriors went to their inside game during the third quarter to outscore the Lady Eagles 11-5 to take a 28-25 lead.
Cherokee County continued to work the ball inside during the fourth quarter, working on Jacksonville's post players, Sharon Osterbind and Malikka Nation who were both in foul trouble. Their strategy worked as Osterbind and Nation both fouled out mid-way through the fourth quarter.
Lacey Buchanon kept the Lady Eagles in the game as time and again she drove the lane for two points, or was fouled in the process. Buchannon finished the game with 22 points.
Jacksonville had several chances to tie the game with three point shots as the clock was running out, but each time the shot was off the mark and the Lady Warriors ended winning the game by five points.
Sharon Osterbind had seven points, Megan Snider six points on two three point shots and Lakken Wood contributed two points in the loss.
Hoping to avenge their loss, the Lady Eagles (4-5, 1-3) met the Lady Warriors on Saturday night but this time came up short again, this time by only one point, 41-40.
Cherokee County controlled the game early, taking a six-point lead in the first quarter as they kept scoring on easy baskets underneath.
Jacksonville kept chipping away and Buchannon tied things up at 13-13 on her first shot of the second quarter. Cherokee County, working hard to control Jacksonville's post player, Sharon Osterbind underneath, jumped out to another six point lead but baskets by Megan Snider and Buchannon cut the Lady Warrior lead to just three, 23-20 at the half.
Cherokee County once again went back to what worked for them before, going inside and increased their lead to seven. It took the Lady Eagles almost three minutes of the third quarter to score as Buchannon drove the lane for two, and then went coast-to-coast for two more.
Cherokee County hit a three at the buzzer for a 33-27 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Jacksonville kept trying to cut into the Lady Warrior lead during the fourth quarter. Osterbind fought her way under the basket and put one up to cut the lead to just one-point, 33-32 with 5:40 left in the game.
After a Lady Warrior time out, Buchannon drove into the lane, missed the shot but got her own rebound and put the ball up and in and was fouled in the process as the Lady Eagles took the lead for the first time in the game, 35-33.
The two teams went back and forth with each team taking the lead. Cherokee County suddenly went on a scoring spree scoring six straight unanswered points before Snider hit a three to bring the Lady Eagle to within three, 41-38.
With just under ten seconds left in the game, a fall away jumper by Osterbind found its mark and the Lady Eagles were down by one. Jacksonville fouled to put Cherokee County at the line and their strategy worked as the Lady Warriors missed and Jacksonville rebounded the ball.
With time running out on the clock the Lady Eagles put up desperation shot but the ball missed its mark and the Lady Eagles went down in defeat 41-40.
Buchannon was the only Lady Eagle in double digits with 18 points; she also had two rebounds and two assists. Snider finished the game with nine points on three 3- pointers, Osterbind had eight points and eight rebounds and Kenyatta Elston scored four points and had eight boards.
