Jacksonville’s Lady Eagles (4-3, 1-1) beat the Lady Eagles of Hokes Bluff, 43-31, for an important area win. Hokes Bluff was ranked No. 10 in Class 4A.

Hokes Bluff outscored Jacksonville 6-4 in the first quarter but the Lady Eagles had a big second quarter putting in 15 points while limiting Hokes Bluff to only four to take a 19-10 lead into the locker room.

Lacey Buchannon, who scored all four points for the Lady Eagles in the first quarter, continued her scoring in the second quarter as she reeled off six straight points, two from the line, and two from steals that resulted in baskets to give her Jacksonville team a 10-6 lead. Buchannon finished with 17 points and five steals.

Ninth-grader Sharon Osterbind, who had an impressive double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Lady Eagles, scored on a put back and then on two foul shots as Jacksonville went up 14-8.

Lakken Wood scored two more baskets for Jacksonville while the Lady Eagles limited Hokes Bluff to just four in the second quarter.

Hokes Bluff came out in the third quarter and hit five quick points before Buchannon pulled up in the lane to give the Lady Eagles their first two points of the second half and a 21-15 lead. Jacksonville was never threatened in the second half.

Osterbind, who dominated on both ends of the floor underneath the basket, had to leave the game with 3:17 in the third quarter when she picked up her third foul. What could have spelled trouble for the Lady Eagles with Osterbind out of the game didn’t come to pass as Jacksonville’s Malikka Nation and Sarah Harsch played admirably in the lane with tight defense that kept Hokes Bluff from scoring inside.

Hokes Bluff, known for its three-point shooting, had a cold night from the outside connecting on only 4-of-25 attempts and were 8-for-40 from the field.

Jacksonville, which played Cherokee County High School Monday night in another area match up at home (results unavailable at press time), turn around and play CCHS on Friday night at Centre.
