Going from the thrill of victory to the agony of defeat, the Jacksonville Golden Eagles were drilled by Oneonta 52-0.

In the opening game of the season Jacksonville picked up a road win over Weaver 41-18, and did so with relative ease.

This week's road game proved to be entirely different for the Golden Eagles as they faced sixth-ranked Oneonta and could find little success.

Against Weaver, the Golden Eagles had almost 500 yards of total offense.

The tables were turned last week as Oneonta totaled 524 yards of total offense to 162 for the Eagles.

On the opening series for the Redskins an Oneonta pass was intercepted by Jacksonville's Jackson Pearson.

Moments later running back Cordero Little, who had rushed for 277 yards against Weaver, broke free for a 25-yard romp and it looked like the Eagles were on their way again.

A holding penalty nullified the gain and for the Eagles, it was a precursor of things to come.

While Jacksonville had some good plays here and there, to include a 22-yard gain by Little and two runs of 14 and 17 yards by Pearson, the Eagles could never sustain a drive.

Oneonta, on the other hand, showed just why it is ranked at No. 6 as the Redskins scored pretty much at will, including a 54-yard sweep pass at the end of the first half to put them up 26-0.

The second half was all Oneonta as they doubled their score.

Jacksonville, minus Little who had rushed for 58 yards in the first half, and fullback Stephen Waters, could mustered only 37 yards rushing and nine yards passing. Both Little and Waters were out with injuries in the second half.

Eagle head coach Roland Houston felt that despite Oneonta being a very powerful team, the Eagles should have handled things better.

"They changed a few things defensively and they ran a different defense than what they ran before but we should have been able to handle it differently than what we did," said Houston.

"I felt the big win over Weaver would be a positive thing for us. I think we got up there (to Oneonta) and got off to a bad start and it just kind of snowballed. We had setbacks early in the game we just never recovered from."

Despite the loss Houston is still very optimistic about this team.

"It's still early in the year. To me we are better than what we played," he said.

"They had an excellent football team and they executed well.

"We have to regroup and improve on what we're doing. We don't have our heads down because it's early in the year and anything can happen from this point on."

Despite the loss Jacksonville did have good individual effort from several players.

Defensive back Forrest Pearson had six tackles, safety Jack Whaley had five tackles as did Immanuel Holifield who broke up two passes and had one tackle for a loss.

The Eagles' home opener is Friday as they take on Ashville.
