• Meet the Eagles tonight

The Golden Eagle Booster Club will have its annual Meet the Eagles night on Tuesday, August 18. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and the parade of athletes will begin at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy an evening a games, music, food and fun as the boosters introduce their fall season teams — cheerleaders, cross country, football, volleyball — as well as the Golden Eagle marching band. This year, the parade of athletes will be led by special guests, the Coosa Valley Golden Eagle football teams and cheerleaders.

• After-school swim camp

The city of Jacksonville Parks and Recreation Department is holding an after-school swim camp Monday through Friday August 10-21 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The camp is for children ages 8-18 and participants must be able to swim the length of the pool without stopping. The cost is $25 per person and participants will learn the basics of being on a swim team through this camp.

• Million Dollar Shootout

The Calhoun County Achievement Foundation is holding a Million Dollar Shootout at Cane Creek Golf Course August 22 and 23. Everyone is invited to come and test their golf skills to qualify for a shot at a million dollars. On August 22, qualifying times are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. On August 23, qualifying times are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The shootout will be held at 5 p.m. on August 23. • EaglePoint holds conference

EaglePoint Church in Jacksonville will hold a women's conference featuring bible study teacher Beth Moore and worship leader Travis Cottrell, Live by satellite. Dates are Friday, August 28 7 p.m. — 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, August 29 8:30 a.m. — noon. The cost is $25. You can get tickets by sending in a registration form with payment to FBC J'ville by August 11 and tickets will be mailed out on August 14 with final details. Tickets are limited and will only be available at the door if any are left! • Oxford firefighters fighting Muscular Dystrophy

The Oxford Fire Department proudly presents the Oxford Firefighters' MDA Charity Softball Tournament to help raise money for research and bring awareness to Muscular Dystrophy. The softball tournament will be held on Saturday August 29th, 2009 at the Oxford Softball Complex on Recreation Drive starting at 8:00 a.m.

The event will be a one-pitch tournament with one courtesy foul ball and is open to any team (league, church, co-ed, etc.). The entry fee is $125.00 per team and is due no later than August 21, 2009. For NSA rules, and bat and ball regulations, please visit www.playnsa.com. A Kid Zone will also be open to the public and will include a moon bounce, an inflatable slide, and much more!

Funds raised through the First Annual Oxford Firefighters' MDA Charity Softball Tournament will enable MDA to pay for muscle biopsies and flu shots, send children to summer camp, organize support group sessions and follow-up clinic visits and help with the purchase of wheelchairs and communication devices. In addition, MDA will be able to continue funding valuable research for the treatment and cures of over 40 neuromuscular diseases. The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a 501(c)3 organization and donations are tax deductible to the extent provided by law.

• Blood drive scheduled

On September 1 from 12 — 5 p.m., Kitty Stone Elementary School will host a blood drive by the American Red Cross — the first Megan Brittain Day blood drive.

• West Side celebration

West Side Baptist Church, located at 713 Mountain Ave. NW, will be celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.

• Gardening programs

A series of gardening programs for the public, sponsored by the Calhoun County Master Gardeners and the Calhoun County Commission, will be held the fourth Wednesday of each month from noon until 1 p.m. at the Cane Creek Community Garden, McClellan. The Garden is located across the street from Longleaf Lodge. Please bring your own lunch. With the exception of the September program all sessions are free. • Thursdays are fundays

The Jacksonville Parks and Recreation Department is hosting Thursdays are Fundays every Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Jacksonville Community Center. Residents are encouraged to bring their favorite board game to share.

• Head Start applications

Piedmont Head Start is accepting applications daily from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. for the 2009-10 program year. The program is open to children through the age of 5 who turn 3 by Sept.1. Parents must bring child's certified birth certificate, current proof of income and current immunization record/blue slip. Call 447-0326 for more information.

• Library board meeting

The Public Library Board of Trustees meets the third Wednesday of each month at 3:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 200 Clinton S.E. Anyone needing accommodations is asked to contact librarian Barbara Rowell at 435-6332. There will not be a meeting in August, meetings will resume in September.

• Music Hall

• Clyde Cox Memorial Fund

The Jacksonville High School Golden Eagle Band is looking for donations to their Clyde Cox Memorial Fund. This fund goes directly to the purchase of instruments for students to use. All donations are tax-deductible. You can send donations to JHS Band Boosters, PO Box 208, Jacksonville, AL 36265. Please mark them for the Clyde Cox fund. • Senior dance

A senior dance is at the Senior Center from 6:30-9:30 p.m. the second Friday of each month.

• Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous meets at noon each Thursday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 400 Chinabee Ave., just off the Square. Call 847-0909 for more information.

• Narcotics Anonymous

A Narcotics Anonymous group meets from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at First United Methodist Church behind McDonald's. For more information call 435-4881.

• Stamp Club meeting

The Calhoun County Stamp Club meets at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays in Room 327 Stone Building, Jacksonville State University, corner of Church Avenue and 11th Street. Business, APS sales books and sharing items of philatelic interest take place during the first meeting; program and discussion, review of APS sales books during the second.
