Road crews across northeastern Alabama were preparing this morning, as they have been for days, for winter weather that forecasters say is just hours away.

But so far, local officials say, there has been little to do but wait. Officials said this morning that they had no reports of road hazards in Cleburne or Calhoun counties.

“No problems, whatsoever,” said Shannon Robbins, Cleburne County engineer, this morning.

Calhoun County engineer Brian Rosenbalm agreed, adding the caveat, “It could happen any time.”

Both counties have prepared for a snowstorm.

Rosenbalm said Calhoun County Highway Department crews have been on standby since Monday in anticipation of hazardous road conditions. Vehicles with sand and salt have been stationed throughout the county, he said.

In Heflin, on westbound Interstate 20, there was one weather-related wreck early this morning, according to Heflin police Chief A.J. Benefield. An 18-wheeler hauling tandem trailers jackknifed on the interstate before 1 a.m. and was hit by another tractor-trailer truck, he said. There were no injuries, the chief said.

The truck was still there this morning, near the weigh station, but the road was clear, he said.

Benefield, however, urged residents to stay off roads except in emergencies.

“I wouldn’t get out at all if I didn’t have to,” Benefield said. “It’s just a matter of time.”
