They say the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, and local bakeries, cupcakeries and doughnut shops have taken those words to heart. Want to satisfy a sweet tooth and a funny bone? Try the cupcake delivery service from Mad Hatter, complete with a singing masked bandit. For the morning person, try a dozen pink-glazed donuts or a gift basket from Southern Girl Coffee. Not a sweet on sweets? The “Love Tray” from Bonnie Ray’s comes with sausage balls and the bakery’s famous cheese straws.

Every kiss begins with cake

Mad Hatter Cupcake Shop in Jacksonville is offering delivery of a dozen Valentine's Day cupcakes. Orders include a package tied with curly ribbon and a message card with envelope. For an additional fee, the cupcakes will be delivered by a masked bandit who will sing an original song.

The cupcakery is also offering a mug gift pack with a gourmet coffee sample and three coupons for free cupcakes and cake pops in chocolate, red velvet and strawberry flavors.

Deliveries are limited to businesses located in Jacksonville, Piedmont, Anniston and Oxford and require a minimum purchase of one dozen cupcakes. Deadline for delivery orders is Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. $22 for dozen cupcakes with no extra delivery charge, $40 additional for singing delivery. Mug gift set is $14.95. Visit madhatcakes.com or call 256-452-2486 to order.

Go nuts for doughnuts

Choose a dozen of your favorite treats from Daylight Donuts, with locations in Anniston and Jacksonville. They have a variety of doughnuts glazed with pink icing and sprinkles. Marady Meas, who works at his brother’s store in Anniston, suggests delivering the treats to your loved one with a flower in your mouth for an extra touch of romance. That’s sweet on so many levels. A dozen Daylight doughnuts starts at $6.99.

LaMar’s Donuts in Oxford is offering gourmet doughnuts in a variety of Valentine’s flavors and colors. Call 256-832-4353 for more information.

A cup o’ love

Southern Girl Coffee, a home-roasting and coffee-bean delivery service in Oxford, is offering two gift baskets for Valentine’s. For $15 you can get a half-pound of your choice of beans and a red mug. For $25, you can get two half-pound bags of choice and a tin of chocolate-hazelnut piroulines packaged nicely in a basket with red bow.

Bobby Jones, who runs the business with his daughter Leah — “the girl behind Southern Girl” — will deliver anywhere “within reason” in the county. To place an order, call 256-624-6132.

A berry delicious treat

Too Nice to Slice bakery in Oxford may be in-between locations right now, but they are still serving up sweets for Valentine’s Day. You can order a dozen jumbo chocolate-covered strawberries for $15, or a smaller-size dozen for $10, available in milk and white chocolate. Call 256-403-5396 or email TNTScakes@yahoo.com to order.

The bakery is also providing dessert for Hubbard’s Off Main in downtown Oxford for Valentine’s night, when the menu will feature a heart-shaped cheesecake with warm chocolate ganache.

Love on a platter

Head to Bonnie Ray’s Bake Shoppe in Anniston for one-stop Valentine’s shopping. The well-stocked store offers cakes, cupcakes, doughnuts, and plenty of other treats. Valentine’s specials include a quart of chocolate-covered strawberries for $10, a 6-inch heart-shaped cake for $6.50 and a dozen mini brownie bites for $5. But really, you might as well go for the $25 Love Tray: two dozen sausage bites, two dozen cheese straws and either one quart chocolate-covered strawberries or two dozen brownie bites, served on a platter. Call 256-847-7303.
