Piedmont will have just one wrestler on the mats at this weekend’s state tournament at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville but the chances are good that another Bulldog could become an individual state champion.

Senior Exavyer Jackson won the Class 1A-4A 285-pound championship at the North Super Sectional tournament in Birmingham Saturday and will be the No. 1 seed in his half of the bracket in Huntsville. Jackson will open Friday against Austin Blanton of Lincoln, the No. 4 seed from the South Super Sectional.

Jackson received a bye in the opening round in Birmingham. In his quarterfinal match Friday, he needed just 36 seconds to pin his opponent. In Saturday’s semifinal, Jackson scored another pin, this one in 48 seconds.

In the championship match, Jackson won a 9-2 decision over Macklin Crook of Weaver. Jackson, who played basketball and wrestled this year after a long layoff in wrestling, was 14-1 after the win. By contrast, Crook was 56-12.

Five other Bulldogs scored points for Piedmont in Birmingham but did not advance to Huntsville. Jamie Crutcher (220) scored eight points. Chase Keener (152) tallied five points. Nick Johnson (132) earned four points, Logan Smith (145) three points and Krae Keener (195) two points. Crutcher and Chase Keener are sophomores. Krae Keener is a freshman. Johnson and Smith are seventh-graders.
