That’s the number of candidates the new Jacksonville State football coach will have interviewed for the vacant defensive coordinator’s position he hopes to fill by next week.
Grass was expected to talk with former Eastern Michigan linebackers coach Mark Criner either today or Friday and make it the last interview. Criner, 47, was Idaho’s defensive coordinator for six years before joining EMU’s staff in June.
“I’ve got too many to choose from right now, I don’t need to muddy the waters,” he said. “I couldn’t ask for a better pool to choose from. They are six good candidates.”
Grass previously has interviewed former East Carolina head coach and Arkansas State DC/interim head coach John Thompson, former Arkansas State and Georgia Southern defensive coordinator Kevin Corless, Fordham defensive coordinator David Blackwell, Auburn defensive assistant Brandon Hall and Foley head coach Todd Watson.
“It’ll all shake out by Friday or Monday,” Grass said. “I want to get somebody in place by next week.”
Ashville High signee E.J. Moss said he knew the Gamecocks didn’t have a defensive coordinator or complete defensive staff as he was wavering between JSU and UAB, but it had no effect on his decision.
“I talked to most of the coaching staff and I trust them well enough to make that right decision,” the linebacker said.
