Tony Moreland, the co-chairman of the county party, said he announced Howard’s resignation at a meeting Tuesday night; Howard officially resigned on Saturday, he said. Moreland will serve as acting chairman until the party appoints a permanent replacement.
Howard said today that he left his position for personal reasons, and deferred further questions to party officials.
Moreland declined to elaborate on the reasons for Howard’s resignation, but said the party was disappointed to see him leave.
“Gene did some great things,” Moreland said Wednesday. “We regret that he resigned.”
Moreland said that when he made the announcement Tuesday most members of the party were unaware of Howard’s resignation. The announcement came during a called meeting to present candidates who had qualified for the upcoming 2014 elections.
Friday is the deadline to qualify with the state’s political parties to run for office in this year’s elections. Party primary elections are set for June 3. The general election is Nov. 4.
“We’re moving forward and the candidates are excited,” Moreland said. “We want to thank President Barack Obama for making this a watershed year for the Republican Party.”
