The immediate comparison will be with his friend and former boss, ex-JSU head coach Bill Clark.
Clark was in his first year as a college head coach last year and directed the Gamecocks to unprecedented Division I success. He, of course, had five years as a coordinator at a fledgling Division I program after a championship high school head coaching career before getting the JSU job.
Grass was in his first year as a college coach last year as Clark’s offensive coordinator, one year removed as Oxford High’s head coach.
The second comparison will be with Bill Burgess, the only coach to guide the JSU program to a national championship. Burgess stepped right off the field at Oxford to become the Gamecocks’ head coach in 1985.
None of this has been lost on Grass. During his introductory news conference he mentioned telling Burgess how he is taking his chair for the second time in his career.
Big shoes to fill indeed.
