It was very disappointing to hear that the Jacksonville Board of Education is considering moving Kitty Stone Elementary School to the outskirts of the city. Moving the school away from its current location brings with it the certainty of many of the negative outcomes associated with sprawl: dilapidated, unoccupied buildings, decaying neighborhoods, criminal activity and, most importantly, the loss of a vital component of a strong city center.

The school’s current location provides convenience for parents who live and work in the community, as well as proximity to the public library and the community center. Having had a child who attended Kitty Stone, I can attest to the importance it made in our lives to have the school at its current site.

I encourage the board to consider all of the consequences of moving the school’s location, and to contemplate the loss of benefits its current location provides. The final decision should be for the betterment of the Jacksonville community, and not because it was recommended by architects who have no stake in the aftermath.
