Earlon McWhorter, 76, owner of McWhorter and Company Inc. and McWhorter Properties LLC, was inducted into the Alabama Associated General Contractors Construction Hall of Fame Friday.

According to its website, the Alabama AGC annually honors people who have “changed the landscape of construction” in their state and the nation through their professionalism, active support of the industry and active support of their community.

McWhorter, of Anniston, has been working in construction since he was in high school. He received a bachelor’s degree in building science from Auburn University in 1968 and in 1971 opened McWhorter and Company.

“I’ve never been very far from construction,” McWhorter said.

Through McWhorter and Company he has built the Williamson Commerce Center at 8th and Noble streets, the medical office at Regional Medical Center, several schools and banks in the area and 200 Lowe’s Home Centers in more than 30 states, McWhorter said.

He started McWhorter Properties around 1989 and through that company he developed 50 of the 200 Lowe’s centers constructed by McWhorter and Company. Developing the properties meant visiting the chosen cities, finding the property, financing and building the store and then leasing or selling it to the Lowe’s corporation, McWhorter said.

McWhorter said he is honored to be among the 2014 inductees, but it’s his employees who have made the company successful.

“It’s really a tribute to the employees at McWhorter and Company over the last 40 years,” McWhorter said.

McWhorter is also a former trustee of Auburn University (2001-2009), credited with fostering unity during a turbulent period, and has donated millions of dollars to the institution.

McWhorter was inducted into the Hall of Fame along with Sam Moore, Jr., Bob Barnett, Leroy McAbee, Sr., and Patrick B. Davis, Jr.
