Most people don’t realize that calls to raise the minimum wage have brought minority communities an increase in unemployment. Nor do they understand that only the government and unions benefit from it.

The government benefits by increased tax collections without having to pass a bill raising taxes. The unions benefit because some contracts are indexed to the minimum; the minimum goes up and so does union pay.

With the union-backed protests at Wal-Mart and fast food stores, people tend to get involved emotionally — it seems to be a good thing until they realize that all costs go up when this is done. Minimum-wage jobs are starter jobs. Single moms with two kids who work 10 years at a minimum-wage job show a lack of concern for themselves. No ambition to better themselves through more training, whereby employers would have real reason to grant a raise.

This has never been a good idea and has reduced employment when applied. The Star likes to paint itself as standing up for the little guy. Do it here with this issue and come out against it.
