WEAVER — A request from a gas station on U.S. 431 to annex into Weaver’s city limits died without a motion from the City Council on Tuesday night.

Weaver Mayor Wayne Willis called the meeting specifically to address the request from Fuller Gasoline Company to be included in the city limits for the purposes of police protection and to take advantage of Sunday alcohol sales. The gas station is about four miles outside of Weaver.

No action was taken on the measure at the meeting.

Willis said although he received the request prior to the last regular council meeting on Dec. 10, he wanted to discuss the matter with Calhoun County Commissioner J.D. Hess, whose district covers the Saks area where Fuller is located, and Alabama Rep. Randy Wood, whose district includes Weaver, Anniston and the county, before bringing the matter to the council for a vote.

Willis said after the meeting Hess and Wood both opposed the measure.

“It doesn’t make any sense for us to go into an established community and take an existing business from them,” Willis said. “While I’m interested in any business that wants to come to Weaver, we really don’t want to be burning bridges with our neighbors.”

Willis said the city should focus on development around Alabama 21, the Buckhorn neighborhood and the Alexandria-Jacksonville Highway for growth.

Councilman Jeff Clendenning said after the meeting he did not make a motion on the request because he wanted more information, but did not rule out bringing the request back to the council in the future. At a meeting last month, the councilman said he wants to encourage residents and businesses to annex into Weaver.

No representatives from Fuller attended the meeting, and attempts to reach an owner on Tuesday were unsuccessful.
