Re “Piedmont City Council agrees to more talks on wireless Internet” (News article, Dec. 4):

As a teacher, I am in the school business. To be a successful teacher, I know I need the support of my fellow teachers, parents, administration and the community. We have had many local industries tell us what type of employees they are looking for and the necessary skills needed to fill their job openings.

It’s the 21st-century skills they are looking for, and Piedmont’s schools as well as others in the area are teaching these skills through the use of technology. These 21st-century skills include environmental literacy, critical thinking and problem solving, communication and collaboration, initiative and self-direction and leadership and responsibility, just to name a few. When a school district builds on this foundation while also including the necessary support systems such as assessments, strategic teaching, professional development and evidence-based learning, students are more engaged in the learning process and graduate better prepared to thrive in today’s global economy.

Piedmont’s schools have built this foundation and have taken a leadership role of incorporating technology into the classroom as well as providing it in the homes of the students. I hope there are other City Council members who realize they are in the “school business” and will reinstate the monthly payments previously agreed to. Otherwise, Councilman Frank Cobb and others might find out that not being in the school business will have them losing their City Council positions in the next election.
