The Wall Street Journal's latest foray into longform, investigative journalism isn't for the weak at heart.

Today, the Journal kicked off a lengthy series on the U.S. military's lobotomy operations on World War II veterans who displayed psychiatric symptoms. The military had long denied the operations took place, the Journal said, but the newspaper uncovered boxes of documents at the National Archives that proved otherwise.

There also is an Alabama angle -- some of the operations took place at the Veterans Administration hospital in Tuskegee.

Below is a PBS video on one of the story's main characters.
