As a new resident of Cleburne County, I am horrified by the laws the County Commission finds to be humane regarding the control, or lack of control, of dogs by their owners.

Vicious dogs, which the owner knows of and has been witness to, acts of mutilation and killing of multiple neighborhood cats and the attacks on other dogs, are free to do as they please. Shame on you and your mothers for raising such callous and heartless beings (note the lack of the use of humane).

I have made several attempts to address the cruelty with the landlord and the owners I know. One owner refuses to act against the abuse and destruction of the neighborhood animals by his own pet and enthusiastically promotes its freedom to do so.

This is the age of communication; “the press” is no longer limited to local newspapers. Viral posts raising support and condemnation of one cause or another on the Internet are everyday events, and I am gearing up for such a pursuit. The law may be on the dog owner’s side, but the law is not always right, and what always is right is seldom the law. However, as the commission knows (and has the authority to amend), laws can be made right.
