As excited as Barry Hill sounded to sign his scholarship papers for Jacksonville State, it’s almost as if he wishes his college season started today.

A 6-foot-8 power forward from Parrish, Hill made his choice official at the end of the school day Wednesday.

“I weighed my options, looked to see where the best was for me and it was Jacksonville State,” he said by telephone from the school’s principal’s office.

There was an Internet report that said Hill was going to delay his signing until noon Thursday. School officials do plan a ceremony Friday, but the signing was going to happen the first day of the early period.

“I can’t wait any more,” he said. “I just wanted to do it right now.”

Hill committed to the Gamecocks last month. He chose them over Ohio Valley Conference rivals Murray State and Austin Peay, Western Kentucky, Jacksonville (Fla.), UAB and Troy.

Parrish coach Heath Burns said Hill’s multi-faceted skill set would play well with the Gamecocks. He is a hard-to-matchup hybrid 3/4 just as comfortable posting up as he is shooting it from the outside.

He led the state in blocked shots last season and his team in 3-point shooting.

“He’s a guy who can step into any program right off and be a difference-maker for any team,” Burns said. “He’s not a guy who can do one or two things. He’s a special kid, a special talent, you don’t see very often.”
