The sophomore likes that all of her classmates are friends, but she doesn’t like that Faith doesn’t have a big-school atmosphere and especially that it doesn’t have a football team.
But Faith Christian is all Stephens knows. She has attended the school since kindergarten. In two years she will graduate, but has no idea what she wants to do then.
As for now, Stephens is a point guard on the basketball team and outside hitter on the volleyball team. In her spare time, she also sings in her church’s youth chorus.
Recently, Stephens arrived at practice early to sit down with Anniston Star sports writer Brandon Miller and answer 10 questions.
Question: What’s the best part about basketball?
Answer: Basketball here is like football at other schools. Basketball is the sport that everyone comes to. I love getting to play with my teammates, being confident in my game and hearing the crowd cheer us on.
Q: Are you more of a morning or night person?
A: Night. I’m grouchy in the morning and hate getting up. When I stay up, I get more hyper.
Q: Is it weird having homecoming during basketball season?
A: Yes. Well, it’s not weird for me because I don’t know any different, but walking on the basketball court.
Q: If you could meet anyone, who would you like to meet?
A: Pat Summitt. (Former Tennessee women’s basketball coach.) I love the way she coached and of course because of the basketball thing. She was just like the perfect coach to me. And I’m a Tennessee fan, also, so that makes it that much better.
Q: What are you most looking forward to this season?
A: Adjusting to new coaches and a lot of new players. Our first game was Tuesday and the way we worked together as a team was a lot different than it’s been in the past. Last year, it was more like everything on one person’s shoulders, and Tuesday, things were a lot more balanced. We all scored, and all did our jobs. You could tell we were all passionate about it.
Q: Do you have any pets?
A: I have a dog named Pixie. She’s a dachshund and 7 or 8. She’s very playful and even though she’s getting pretty old, she’s always hyper.
Q: What’s something you wish everyone knew about you?
A: Besides basketball, I guess it would be that singing is the other thing I’m passionate about. Some people know that, but most don’t besides church people.
Q: Is basketball or volleyball your favorite sport to play?
A: Basketball. It’s more of a physical sport and it’s more complicated. It’s more difficult. There’s more to it.
Q: Do you read The Anniston Star?
A: Yes, definitely the sports section. I like reading stats, especially basketball stats. I like to see what everybody is doing.
Q: What’s the best part about your basketball game?
A: I would say dribbling. A lot of girls can’t dribble. I also have discipline and don’t run around in circles and just jack up shots. There’s a difference between boys and girls. Fundamentals are a big deal with girls.
