Speak Out: Dangerous side effects

Every time I see medical advertisements on TV, a shock wave hits me. The medicine that will help you has a list of side effects. Anything from liver damage, heart attack, seizure, you name it … it could invade your body. I have to ask myself, is it worth the risk to take these advertised medicines?

It seems like we are getting overfed with these offers. Either way, we are not safe. If I take a drug that could kill me, or do without, I am not on the winning side.

We are at the mercy of our doctors and drug makers. Take your pick. Medicines should be made with fewer side effects. An old saying goes: If sickness won’t kill you, the drugs will.

On the other side, we’ve come a long way in the medical field. It’s hard to imagine that decades ago a patient had to undergo surgery without modern anesthesia. Lots of alcohol intake and a piece of cloth in their mouth was the only help during an amputation, for instance. Some made it, some did not.

When I stand at the drug counter, I wonder if any of the medicines are what you could call good stuff?
