Two sex offenders convicted recently of abusing children in separate cases received maximum sentences in Calhoun County courtrooms this week.

Circuit Judge Brian Howell on Wednesday sentenced Derick Reza Foroutan, 33, of Anniston to 99 years in prison without the chance for parole. In early August, Foroutan was convicted of first-degree rape for having forcible sex with an 11-year-old girl last year.

On Thursday Circuit Judge Debra H. Jones sentenced Valerie Stanton, 39, to two consecutive 20-year sentences in prison. That means she will have to serve the sentences one after the other. Stanton was convicted in late August of second-degree rape and second-degree sodomy for having a sexual contact with a 15-year-old boy.

The Star is withholding other information about the victims to avoid identifying them.

“The trend in our court system is to give sex offenders the maximum punishment, which myself and my office appreciate because it protects the children in our county,” said Jennifer Weems, a Calhoun County assistant district attorney who prosecutes sex crimes. “By giving them the maximum sentence you are ensuring that they won’t do that to anyone else.”

The jury that convicted Foroutan heard testimony from the victim, at least two witnesses and a forensic analyst who testified that the suspect’s DNA was recovered from the victim’s sexual assault kit after the rape.

The victim’s stepmother, who cared for the victim from the time the girl was 6, testified that she took the victim to the police for an examination after the rape. The victim was later placed in foster care.

In Stanton’s trial the jury heard evidence from the victim and from the state. According to testimony, the victim and Stanton met through an acquaintance and in March or April 2012 began having a sexual relationship.

The victim told jurors that he and Stanton had sexual encounters in Anniston, Weaver and in a hotel in Oxford between 10 and 15 times.

Weems said Stanton bought basketball equipment and paid for him to be a part of an athletic team he could not have been a part of otherwise.

The abuse was reported after the victim's mother discovered it and reported it to police in August 2012.
