OHATCHEE — Abby Nunnelly is not only one of the best seventh-grade female runners in the state, she is also one of the best in the country.

According to usa.milesplit.com, the Ohatchee High varsity runner has posted the 13th fastest cross country time nationally among seventh-grade girls.

Nunnelly runs races of all distances from 5 kilometers to half marathons. A member of the Class of 2019, she is accustomed to winning as well.

However, Nunnelly is just an average 12-year-old, who just happens to love running more than most. She also has a lot of pride in Ohatchee.

Recently, Nunnelly took a few minutes out of her class schedule to sit with Anniston Star sports writer Brandon Miller and run through 10 questions:

Question: What’s it like to be in seventh grade and run on the high school varisty team?

Answer: I would like to say I encourage other people to run. I’m used to running with older people because when I was younger I would run 5Ks with older people. I’m just familiar with running with older people.

Q: How long have you been racing competitively?

A: Four or five years. My first race was in Auburn. It was a 5K.

Q: What’s the best birthday you’ve had?

A: It was probably last year because I got a lot of running stuff. I got a new pair of shoes, new shorts and a lot of shirts. The cotton Nike shirts have little sayings on them.

Q: What’s the longest race you’ve run?

A: A half marathon. It was the Chief Ladiga Half Marathon. I love it. It was in December, and it was colder so I didn’t get that hot.

I ran it in an hour and 55 minutes. It set the state record for an 11-year-old.

Q: What kind of car do you want when you turn 16?

A: I want a red one because it’s Ohatchee. I don’t care what kind it is — I just want it to be red.

Q: If you were to play another sport, what would you like to try?

A: I run track, but I’d like to play basketball. I used to play basketball in elementary school, but I gave it up because of running. I wanted to focus on running.

Q: What is it that you love the most about cross country?

A: I just love running. My uncle got me into it after he did a triathlon, and when I saw the running part I said, “Oh, I could do that,” and that’s how it got started.

Q: What’s your favorite brand of shoes?

A: Brooks. I like their colors definitely, and their padding is better than any others.

Q: What is your favorite sport to watch as a fan?

A: Probably football. My uncle, of course, lives in Auburn and went to the university. So I love Auburn football.

Q: Who drives you to places the most?

A: My mom. She’s just available the most.
