LaQUINTA, Calif. — Lance Evans bounced back from a horrible second round to shoot 4-over-par 76 in the third round of the Golf Channel Am Tour National Championship at PGA West.

After shooting 97 the day before, the Oxford golfer went to the Norman Resort Course Tuesday with an idea of shooting for birdie on every hole. He throttled back on that aggressive approach, but still made three birdies in his round.

“I stood on the first tee and said I’ve been embarrassed enough for one day I’m not going to put another big number up there,” he said. “I did hit some pretty aggressive shots I wouldn’t have hit normally, but not quite as bad as I said going in.”

Evans made his first birdie of the day on his third hole and turned in 4 over. He opened his back nine by going par-birdie-par-birdie. He played his last 12 holes of the day in even par.

“I didn’t have too many bad lies today,” he said. “I just relaxed. I had nothing to lose. You get to pressing and have a negative attitude you’re going to play bad. I just had a good time today.”

One of his playing partners Tuesday, Pasquale Sprague of Lincoln, Calif., scored a hole-in-one Monday. Also playing in their flight are PGA Tour Network radio host Brian Katrek and former big-league pitchers Mark Mulder and Livan Hernandez
