Inspired by this month’s feature on shelter pets (Unsheltered: Part Two: Animal advocates back owner, breeder licensing to curb shelter population), we’re doing something a little different this month...

Introducing Dog Dish Don’t-You-Wish-I-Was-Your Pet of the Month: Wally.

This happy-go-lucky boy has been through a lot in his short life. Days after he was pulled from the Etowah County shelter by Semper Fi Rescue’s Lisa Wippler, Wally broke with parvo. When Wippler took him home after a month at the vet’s, he couldn’t walk or even stand to use the bathroom, she said. “Healthwise, he was fine. The vet said he just had no will.”

Wippler tried swim therapy, essential oils, but it was her dog Recon that finally got Wally back on his feet. “He would go in and just lay with him ... he wouldn’t leave his side.” After his spirit returned, Wally still wouldn’t wag his tail, and Wippler worried he might have nerve damage. “Turned out it had been broken the whole time.”

Today, you’d never guess the handsome, happy dog was that same hopeless shelter pup. “Now he’s amazing,” Wippler said. “He just loves everyone.” Wally has been ready for his forever home for two months and is still awaiting adoption. For more info on Wally, visit www.semperfirescue.com.
