An Anniston man was charged today with attempted murder, after he attacked the patient with whom he shared a room at Regional Medical Center, according to Anniston police.

Devonte Raynard Arnold, 23, was in the Calhoun County Jail this morning. Police arrested him at RMC on Monday night after staff called officers to the hospital, according to police Capt. Allen George.

George said that between 11:15 and 11:41 p.m. Monday, hospital staff heard thumping noises coming from the room Arnold was sharing with the 47-year-old victim. When staff entered the room to investigate, they found the victim lying on the floor with blood coming from his head, nose and mouth, the captain said. No weapons had been used in the attack, George said.

The captain said when police arrived, RMC workers were treating the victim’s injuries.

Police searched for Arnold and found him in a locked room across from the nurse’s station.

According to a warrant for Arnold’s arrest, he struck the victim with his hands, fists and feet in an attempt to kill him.

The captain declined to say how police knew Arnold was the one responsible for the attack and said he did not know the reason behind the attack.

George also said he did not know whether Arnold and the victim knew each other before rooming together at the hospital, or how long the two had been sharing the room.

The victim was airlifted to UAB Hospital, where he was in critical condition in the intensive care unit Monday evening.

According to the captain, the victim had surgery this morning and was in critical condition this afternoon.

Arnold was charged with attempted murder this morning, and denied bond by Circuit Judge Debra Jones. He is to appear in court Oct. 21.
