It’s good to see NASCAR put Jeff Gordon in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship Friday. Late-race deals by other organizations originally bumped him from the sport’s version of the playoffs, which wasn’t fair to Gordon, a four-time Sprint Cup champ.

Those deals benefitted Joey Logano, allowing him to clinch a spot in the Chase. However, Logano won’t have to give up his spot. To accommodate Gordon, NASCAR simply is adding a 13th spot to its customary 12-car playoff.

That’s the opposite of what NASCAR did Monday, when it enacted penalties that pushed Martin Truex Jr. out of the Chase, allowing Ryan Newman to take a spot in the finals.

Why pull Truex but allow Logano to race? NASCAR listened to in-race radio communications over and over, and the nuances probably reveal exactly why these two conflicting decisions are the correct ones to make. But I’m at a loss.

It should be 12 racers in the Chase. If Newman belongs, then so does Gordon. And if Newman and Gordon deserve to go in, Truex and Logano should go out. Only three of those four things happened.

It probably won’t turn out this way, but good grief, here’s hoping Logano doesn’t somehow find his way to the Sprint Cup. That surely wouldn’t happen, would it? Would it?
