Re “Calhoun County man part of historic team” (Sports article, Aug. 28):

I read with great interest the recent article about Socko Johnson, baseball player, pool player and lumberjack. When I was a kid (1950s), Socko played pool at the Smokehouse pool room on Noble Street. He was a great pool player and just about every kid’s hero. At the time, there were only two local players who could compete with Socko, Bill Saunders and a young man named Billy Ledbetter from the Alexandria area.

As Socko grew older, his vision got bad and he lost his pool-shooting ability. Then, as in all sports, younger players emerged. But Socko always stood out as the best of the best.
