An injured Mark Sanchez or rookie Geno Smith? Mark or Geno? Geno or Mark?

The New York Jets are struggling to determine which one of those two will start at quarterback in the Sept. 8 season opener.

Hey, here’s a crazy idea: How about Greg McElroy?

He won’t fumble by running into someone’s rear end, like Sanchez. He’s healthy, unlike Sanchez.

He probably won’t throw three interceptions and step out of the end zone accidently as Smith did in his latest not-ready-for-prime-time preseason performance.

Look, it’s clear neither the Jets nor their fan base want Sanchez in a green-and-white uniform any longer. He is due his salary, whether he plays or not, so that’s why he still has a key to the locker room.

And it’s clear that while Smith might be the future, he definitely isn’t the present. And, finally, no matter who starts at quarterback, the Jets probably will remain home for the playoffs.

So why not go with McElroy, the former Alabama guy who appeared in two games last year, including one in which he led the game-winning touchdown drive against Arizona? It doesn’t seem like that much of a gamble. Who knows? He might turn into a pleasant surprise.

But the Jets seem unwilling to consider the possibility, which helps explain why the Jets are the Jets these days.
