The Major General Patrick R. Cleburne UDC Chapter in July hosted a 10th birthday celebration at the Dodson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Oxford. This UDC chapter was chartered June 1, 2003. Organizing chapter president, Lynda Lowery, Heflin, is shown with a cake depicting the first national flag of the Confederacy, also know as the “Stars and Bars” flag, which continues to be the official flag of the United Daughters of the Confederacy since 1894.

Every years this Cleburne chapter honors veterans, establishes college scholarships, donates to area libraries, give to benevolent causes and works to preserve historic sites. The newest member of the chapter is Peggy Hyatt Cheatwood of Heflin, descendant of William A. Hyatt who served in Co. K 34th Regiment GA Infantry.

Also at the July meeting, chaplain Wilma Gosdin of Woodland memorialized the four chapter members deceased this UDC year. The deceased members included Jo Ann Harper, Heflin; Ruth Pirkle Groover, Heflin and Birmingham; Laurelle Hampton, Anniston and Linda B. Hutchens, Heflin.
