Deputies today were investigating several nude photos of a teen that were taken years ago and recently posted on a social media website.

Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson said a 19-year-old woman told deputies last week that inappropriate photos of her were posted on Facebook. The victim was 15 years old when the photos were taken, Amerson said, and they were sent to her boyfriend. The victim and her boyfriend ended their relationship, the sheriff said, and she believes he put her pictures online. The photos were posted on Aug. 6, according to a report from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office. Amerson said they were removed from the website by the next day.

Amerson said the suspect is now 22, but he was 18 or 19 when the photos were sent to him.

The sheriff said inappropriate photos of children surfacing online are a growing problem. Teens experience pressure from a significant other or their friends to take photos, Amerson said, but they don’t consider the lasting effects.

“It’s so very important for young people to understand it has lifelong implications,” he said.

Amerson said the Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates that once an inappropriate photo is posted online it will be shared around 100,000 times.

The suspect had not been charged today, Amerson said, because deputies are waiting to get confirmation from Facebook that he posted the photos.

Any suspect could be charged with dissemination of child pornography, a felony.
