How's this sound: Alabama as part of a new country, the Texas Republic, that includes the Deep South states along with Texas (obviously), Oklahoma, New Mexico and Louisiana?

It's not gonna happen, of course. But that notion is part of this marvelous collection of world maps put together by the Washington Post that details more information than I can repeat here. (The Texas Republic mention is map No. 11. It may be the weakest of the lot.)

These maps cover topics such as languages, religions, motherhood, gay rights and health care. They show where American acceptance is highest and lowest, where foreigners are most welcome, and which nations are the most and least emotional. Map No. 40, from NASA, shows how the Earth changes with the seasons during the calendar year. It's fascinating stuff.
