Smoke-free dining in restaurants and bars is a given in most states, but not in Alabama.

I prefer to spend my money in places that don’t allow smoking. This is a personal thank-you to those business owners who put their patrons’ and employees’ health as a priority.

More than three-fourths of Alabamians don’t smoke. We know there is no safe amount of exposure to secondhand smoke and that just being around smoke can cause cancers, lung problems and heart disease. Restaurants and bars that allow smoking force their workers to choose between their health or a paycheck.

I will continue to support smoke-free businesses in our city. I invite you to watch a video featuring three popular restaurants in Alabama that are smoke-free. The video shows that smoke-free dining has not hurt their businesses. See it at www.youtube.com/smokefreebusiness.
