After reading Wright Thompson’s brilliant story in ESPN the Magazine on Johnny Manziel, I’m beginning to feel sorry for the Texas A&M quarterback.

I feel sorry for Manziel because it appears he doesn’t have the proper influences around him.

There’s no one to stop him from sending out his ill advised tweets. No one to tell him not to attend frat parties at the University of Texas, a rival school where some drunk idiot could take a shot at him.

It seems like everyone wants a piece of his fame. His parents, according to the piece, even bring boxes of merchandise for him to sign when he’s home in Tyler, Texas. It’s understandable why Manziel probably feels he can’t trust anyone.

Also, according to the piece, there is a disconnect between the Manziel’s and Texas A&M.

From the outside looking in, Manziel seems to be headed down a destructive path.

In Thompson’s piece, Manziel’s father, Paul, said he is worried about his son’s drinking. He said he thinks things could come unraveled for Johnny and if they do, it will be bad.

So why not pull him aside and give him a stern talking to? If that doesn’t work, cut off some of his funds that pay for all of the extravagant trips he takes.

Manziel can’t say he’s just a 20-year-old college kid, but not take advice from those around him.

Look, Manziel is a fantastic talent and I’m sure the Aggies will have a great season.

I just hope someone is able to reach him before it’s too late.
