Piedmont outlasted Troy in a 17-16 slugfest to capture the Dixie Youth Baseball 9- and 10-year-old state championship in Oxford on Friday afternoon. The young Bulldogs will now represent Alabama in the Dixie Youth World Series in Laurel, Miss., starting Aug. 3.

They will face a team from Arkansas at 5:30 p.m. in the 12-team event.

On Friday, Piedmont broke a 12-12 tie in the top of the fifth inning on a leadoff home run by Jakari Foster that cleared the fence in right-center field. Winning pitcher Noah Reedy, Jack Hayes, Silas Thompson and Max Hanson added RBIs in the inning to put Piedmont ahead 17-12.

Troy got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth then scored once in the sixth. Troy had the tying run at second base when Reedy grabbed a come-backer to the mound and threw to first for the final out.

Piedmont sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the first inning. Hayes had a solo home run. Hanson singled home two, Chaz Pope stroked a two-run double and Hayden Young added an RBI single.

The 6-0 lead didn’t last long as Troy scored seven runs in the bottom of the first. Piedmont regrouped with five runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run hit by Cassius Fairs. Steven Raney, Thompson, Young and Foster had one RBI apiece.

After losing its opening game in the state tournament, the Piedmont team won six straight games.
