Foster and his teammates downed previously undefeated Troy 9-5 while Saraland was eliminating South Bibb 7-2. Piedmont, Saraland and Troy are the only teams left in the double-elimination tournament and each has one loss. As the team that has played the most tournament games, Piedmont automatically advances to today’s title game. Troy and Saraland play today at 10 a.m. The winner meets Piedmont for the state championship and a berth in the Dixie Youth world series at 1:30 p.m. at the Oxford youth baseball fields adjacent to Oxford Lake.
In the win over Troy, the young Bulldogs fell behind early 3-0 then knotted the score 3-3 in the home half of the second inning. Piedmont took the lead with three runs in the fourth. Cassius Fairs doubled to open the inning. After Chaz Pope walked, Hayden Young doubled to score Fairs with the go-ahead run. Pope came home on a wild pitch then Jakari Foster beat out an infield hit, scoring Young.
Troy closed the gap to 6-5 in the fifth but Piedmont answered with three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning. Jack Hayes scored from second base when Steven Raney doubled to center field. One out later, Max Hanson singled to put runners on third and first. Fairs’ hit to left scored Raney and moved Hanson to third. Hanson scored when Pope hit into a fielder’s choice.
Piedmont lost its opening tournament game and has survived five elimination games. The Bulldogs won twice Wednesday and twice Thursday.
