The Tunnel to Towers Foundation invited Ben Tomlinson and about a dozen other severely wounded soldiers and their families to New York City to see the Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks from aboard the Intrepid. Tomlinson was accompanied by his parents, Chuck and Debbie.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation builds Smart Homes for the most severely injured service members returning home. Each home is custom designed to address the unique needs of each individual. Energy efficient, automated and easily accessible — these homes use “adaptive technology” to help the most severely injured heroes live better, more independent lives.

Tomlinson arrived in Afghanistan in May 2009. Three months later, while securing a road during a drug raid in a marketplace, a mortar hit the top of a building near where he was standing. Shrapnel peppered his body. Surgery followed. Three weeks later, he was back on his job.

He went back to Afghanistan in November 2010. This time, while on a rooftop, he was shot through the upper back and a bullet ripped through his chest. Heat and shock from the round damaged his spinal card, paralyzing him from the chest down.

He’s been in a wheelchair since.

While in New York, Tomlinson was interviewed by Megyn Kelly with Fox News for a segment. He and the others went to the 102 floor of the Freedom Tower being build, went to the 911 Memorial and saw the Statue of Liberty from aboard a fire boat with local firemen as their personal guides.

Tomlinson’s house will be built this year.
