That's not Mayor Vaughn Stewart; it's Elton John.

Appendicitis isn't a minor issue. If not caught early enough, it can lead to all sorts of physical problems, not the least of which is death if there's a rupture.

That said, we're glad to hear that Anniston Mayor Vaughn Stewart is recovering nicely from his appendicitis surgery this weekend at Regional Medical Center.

Stewart, it turns out, is in rare company:

  • Elton John's summer tour has been cancelled because of his appendicitis.
  • The San Francisco Giants' Joaquin Arias, an infielder, has been placed on the disabled list because of appendicitis.
  • Singer and actor Johnny Ruffo has had appendicitis surgery this summer.
  • And, new research shows that people who are exposed to high levels of air pollution may be at risk for appendicitis. (Not sure that relates to Anniston and Mayor Stewart, but it's worth mentioning, nonetheless.)
