Recently at the Walmart check-out line, I suggested to the gentleman behind me, who had only one item, to come ahead. With many items in my cart, I was searching for my checkbook or credit card. Finding neither, I audibly expressed, “I was in trouble — with no way to pay.”

This thoughtful, smiling man received his change, turned back and placed a $10 bill on the counter for me. I protested, but he pushed the bill toward me, smiled and walked away without a word. I was so astonished and said nothing.

Now recovered, I want to properly thank him for this special act of caring and kindness. I am impressed.

The cashier suggested she check me out and hold the cart while I quickly went home for my checkbook. Upon returning to Walmart, all I did was pay and leave.

Today, seemingly everyone is constantly engaged with technology in their hands and to the ears, totally unaware. However, these beneficient acts of kindness restore my confidence in human nature and the golden rule. Again, I thank you.
