If you were tasked with designing a 51-star U.S. flag, how would you arrange them? Odd numbers can be difficult.

That point wasn't highlighted in today's New York Times story about the unveiling of the Frederick Douglass statue at the Capitol, but mentioned was Washington, D.C.'s ongoing efforts to get voting representation in Congress and, by some, statehood.

The statehood issue isn't new. It's been around for years. Recently, however, Sen. Harry Reid, D-N.V., reaffirmed his support for adding Washington,D.C., as the 51st state. It's not likely to happen, for several reasons, not the least of which would be political concerns about adding to the Senate and House makeup.

Nevertheless, it's an interesting thought, including the potential rearrangement of the U.S. flag.
