Police were still searching for suspects today after a woman was assaulted and shot at last week on Cooper Avenue.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said the 20-year-old victim was assaulted on June 6 around 8 p.m. by three women outside a Cooper Homes apartment. The victim did not live at the apartment complex, George said, and he was uncertain why she was visiting. The suspects reportedly sprayed mace in the victim’s face, grabbed her from a car as she tried to escape, hit her in the side with a baseball bat and punched her repeatedly, George said.

A group of men broke up the fight, George said, but as the victim drove away another man shot at the woman’s car. The bullet went through the driver’s side door and struck the passenger side of the dashboard, the captain said. The victim was not struck by the bullet, George said, and police recovered one round from the vehicle. George said the victim suffered minor scratches and bruises and did not receive medical treatment the night of the incident.

George was uncertain what started the altercation.

The incident was still under investigation today, George said.

Any suspects could be charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle — a felony — and misdemeanor third-degree assault.
