The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday was investigating a report of a second-degree assault on the 1300 block of U.S. 431 Sunday night in which the victim’s nose was broken.

According to Sheriff Larry Amerson, the victim was at a wedding reception when he accidentally bumped into a woman. An argument broke out between the two, Amerson said.

The sheriff said other people became aware of the argument, including the woman’s father and another man, Amerson said.

Amerson said the two men told the victim to leave, but he refused. According to Amerson, one of the men grabbed the victim by the throat while the other punched him. Amerson said the victim said he believed three men had struck him and he could not tell which man did what.

The victim suffered from a broken nose, multiple bruises to his face, a laceration across the bridge of his nose, and an injured middle finger from hitting his hand on a beer keg, Amerson said.

Amerson said the victim was taken to Riverview Regional Medical Hospital where he had X-rays and received treatment for his injured nose. His condition was stable on Tuesday afternoon, Amerson said.

The suspects could face felony charges of assault in the second degree.
