Thursday was spent in Tuscaloosa, where Alabama introduced a new women's basketball coach, Kristy Curry. About two hours later, there was another news conference, but this one was for Jacksonville State softball coach Jana McGinnis, as her team prepares to play in the Tuscaloosa Regional.

If you didn't know otherwise, you'd swear they're the same person. Both have big smiles and Southern accents. Both seem to be glass-half-full types of people. Both are winners. And both seem to realize people are your most valuable resource.

In both news conferences, both coaches drew smiles and a laugh or two from reporters. Both treated everyone as if they knew them forever -- even if they were meeting them for the first time.

If Curry's time at Alabama matches what McGinnis has done at JSU, then Tide athletics director Bill Battle will have chosen wisely. McGinnis has her team playing in an NCAA regional for the fifth time in six years.

Then again, Curry already seems to know about how to get a team into the NCAA tournament. Curry taken Purdue and Texas Tech to a combined nine NCAA trips in the past 14 years.

As it happens, that's exactly nine more trips than Alabama's women's basketball team has made in that span.
