The rosters for the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s annual North-South baseball games in July were announced last week and Ranburne senior-to-be Mark David Smith will play for the North squad.

This season, Smith hit .391 for the Bulldogs with 34 hits in 87 official at-bats. Seven of his hits were doubles. He scored 24 runs and had 22 RBIs. Ten walks upped his on-base percentage to .462.

Smith finished the season as Ranburne’s leadoff hitter and centerfielder. Bulldogs’ coach Chad Young said he was out of position both places but filled the roles better than anyone else available. Young described Smith as an unselfish player, “… one of those guys who will hit where you ask him and play where you ask him.”

“He’s more of a middle guy, a 5-6 type hitter,” Young said. “He puts the ball in play which is what you like from a leadoff hitter but he’s not the type person you want to bunt. … He’s more of a person you’d like to drive in runs but he had to play there for us just because we didn’t have a true leadoff hitter.”

Young also feels Smith’s work ethic will endear him to the All-Star coaches.

“Mark David’s going to be a very focused, all-business type person who works extremely hard. He’s going to take anything they ask him to do and he works on it.”

The North-South doubleheader will be played on Monday, July 15, at Montgomery’s Riverwalk Stadium, the home field of the Montgomery Biscuits.
