MONTGOMERY — Base-running mistakes cost Wellborn in its opener in the Class 2A state softball tournament Thursday, and the Panthers lost 5-2 to Goshen.

Wellborn will play the Mobile Christian-Lexington loser in an elimination game Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Lagoon Park.

The Panthers, making their first state-tourney appearance since 2001, got two hits from Carlee Mullinax, and Shae Coley drove in one of the Panthers’ runs on a fourth-inning single.

Wellborn could have had bases loaded in the third inning, but Kamryn Beasley got caught in a rundown between second and third bases for the third out.

Lauren Carroll was thrown out stealing third base for the third out in the fifth inning. Goshen also pulled off a sixth-inning double play on Alyssa Brooks’ fielder’s choice, forcing Shae Coley out at second base and throwing home to tag Brooklyn Angle.

Angle had a strong pitching performance, spreading six hits and four earned runs over six innings and struck out four batters with no walks. She held Goshen senior Shelby Vinson, who has 16 home runs on the season, to an 0-for-3 showing.

The big blow for Goshen was Katie Thomas’ two-run home run in the first inning.orts columnist Joe Medley: 256-235-3576, On Twitter @jmedley_star.
