Let’s not make fun of Manti Te’o today. He’s too easy of a target, and besides, how many fake girlfriend jokes can there be?

However, Te’o apparently still is way sensitive about the issue. His new employer, the San Diego Chargers, is protecting him like Fort Knox.

The team seems willing to make pretty much any player on its roster available to reporters, even rookies, but Te’o remains off-limits. You can talk to any player about anything, except the most interesting and newsworthy guy in a San Diego jersey.

Before Te’o girlfriend was revealed as a hoax, he was a great interview. At the news conferences in Miami before the BCS National Championship Game, he proved he could answer questions about anything -- and entertain reporters at times with his answers.

Maybe that’s hurt him in a sense -- Te’o seemed a little too good at times at telling a great story about himself, a teammate, his team, his family, his fake girlfriend, etc.

We’re not sure if Operation Shutdown is a decision by Te’o or the Chargers, but at some point, they have to get over it like most of the rest of us have.

Sure, some folks will tell fake girlfriend jokes forever and a day. It’s not going to go away completely. But why worry about that? The people still telling fake girlfriend jokes probably are the ones who still laugh at the mention of Monica Lewinsky.
