Mike McCord grew up in the business from which he’s retiring this week.

In 1946, when McCord’s late father, Clyde McCord, opened an electronics store in Gadsden, the elder McCord probably had no idea that it would still be going strong 67 years later.

McCord Communications, located on Noble Street in Anniston, also has offices in Gadsden and Albertville.

McCord said by the time he became involved, the company had evolved into a two-way radio business. He opened the Anniston office in 1970. After his father’s death in 1975, McCord took over as president of the company and did just what his father would have expected him to do – he not only kept the business going, it saw much expansion under his leadership.

“I built the paging business back in the ‘80s,” said McCord. “We had all the paging in this area which included 13 counties. We sold that in 1990 to a large regional paging carrier. We were in the cellular business from the starting up of that, which was from about 1990 to about 2005.”

McCord said the company has always been a Motorola dealer. Nowadays it sells public safety communications to police and fire departments as well as industries.

He said though this is the only job he’s ever had, it seems as if he’s had many because of the various product lines and phases the company has gone through.

Six years ago he helped form ESOP (Employee Stock Option Program), which made McCord Communications, with its 55 employees, an employee-owned business. McCord will serve on the board of directors.

“When we began ESOP, my plan was to move the stock over to the employees and that would kind of set the timetable for me,” he said. “Once that took place, I felt like it was time for me to move on.”

McCord is married to the former Kelly Johnson. He has three children. His son Tim lives in Gadsden, a daughter, Jessica George lives in Prattville, and Savannah lives in Jacksonville. His stepson, Graham Lewis, also lives in Jacksonville.

His grandchildren are Spencer McCord and Ethan, Addison and Isabelle George.

His mother, Frances McCord, lives in Gadsden.

McCord is a member of Rotary Club of Anniston, volunteers with Boys and Girls Club and First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville where he serves on the finance committee. He enjoys his sailboat that is docked in Destin, riding his motorcycle across the country and photography. His favorite subjects to photograph are his grandchildren.
